Briiv Pro Filters š³ šŖØ
Briiv Pro comes with a host of improvements, including a larger fan which has a higher clean air output and means Briiv Pro is even more powerful. With this extra power, weāve been able to explore some new filter mediums that the original Briiv couldnāt handle.Ā
Briiv and Briiv Pro both use a triple filter to remove pollutants and VOCs from the air. While the original Briiv will only work with the original moss, the coconut filter, and the nano matrix filter, weāve been able to develop some alternative options for Briiv Pro if you want to move away from the classics.Ā

Briiv Pro has a whole new moss filter!Ā
Sphagnum moss is denser than the reindeer lichen, which means the additional power in Briiv Pro is perfect for utilising the extra benefits this moss has. In addition to its sponge-like structure being perfect to sift pollutants from the air, the new moss is locally sourced Yorkshire moss which means it has a much lower carbon footprint. It also doesnāt require as much processing and is sent to us dry; all of this makes it a much more efficient option! Unlike our reindeer moss the sphagnum moss can get wet. This means the moss itself will last longer; instead of disposing of your dusty moss before its time you can give it a rinse off in the sink, and as long as itās mostly dry it can go right back into your Briiv!
Sphagnum moss has antimicrobial properties to help remove and eliminate nasties from your air. Because of its cellular makeup sphagnum moss creates an acidic environment around it which inhibits the growth of bacteria. Medics in World War 1 actually used sphagnum moss to dress and treat wounds because of its amazing properties!Ā
Weāre always looking for ways we can improve the sustainability of Briiv, and Briiv Pro gave us an excellent opportunity for this. Not only can we source the sphagnum moss locally, but thereās also the option for you to do this as well. Rather than us sending Yorkshire moss all the way to Australia, you can find a local garden centre or supplier and source it yourself! This is a more circular approach to our filters and makes them more accessible and cost effective.Ā
Because itās able to get wet, you could even dye your sphagnum moss! While ours is a classic Briiv green, you could use diluted red food colouring to get the pink Briiv youāve always dreamed of (or maybe thatās just meā¦).Ā
At the end of its life, the moss can join your home compost or be added to your soil- it even makes a good house plant topper!Ā

Activated Carbon
This new iteration of Briiv takes the existing capabilities of the activated carbon in the matrix filter and amplifies it ten-fold. Since Briiv was officially released into the world in 2021 weāve had tons of feedback from our customers and one of the things you love about Briiv is its ability to eliminate odours while keeping the air clear. We did try to incorporate this with Briiv Black Edition in 2022, but unfortunately due to supply issues we werenāt able to launch this. Now with Briiv Pro weāve been able to explore the option again, and this time weāre heading out guns blazing.
Briiv Pro with the activated carbon filter can be used to clean the air in your home or office and eliminate bad odours all together. The natural material is non-toxic, so itās safe for you, your pets, and the environment. The new activated carbon filter is perfect for removing unwanted smells from the air, as well as capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs can be found in a range of household items and building materials including aerosols, air fresheners, cleaning products, and cosmetics. They can also be present through wood-burning, smoking or cooking. These can contribute to illness and discomfort, so removing them where you can is important.
Activated carbon is a great filter option for Briiv because when itās finished with you can return it to soil. While it doesnāt biodegrade, it can be mixed into soil where itās shown to be excellent for improving soil structure and preventing a build-up of impurities. Because it doesnāt break down, it has carbon sequestering properties which prevent the release of CO2 and VOCs back into the atmosphere.
We arenāt the first to use activated carbon for its incredible filtration capabilities (and we wonāt be the last) but unlike other brands, we let the carbon do its thing without the constraints of fabric or plastic casings (which means less material waste and better airflow).
While the original Briiv does have an activated carbon component in the matrix filter, the activated carbon filter takes this to the next level to remove odours and VOCs. This makes it a perfect addition to any areas of the home which might smell a little off; from the lingering scents of last nightās cooking to the rubbish bin that didnāt get taken out on time, you can look forward to coming home to fresh air without any unpleasant aromas.

Medical Grade HEPA Filter
While our existing nano matrix is a great option for everyday filtration, weāve also decided to introduce a medical grade HEPA filter for Briiv Pro that can be used in its place.Ā
HEPA filters are high-efficiency particulate air filters, and medical grade HEPA 13 filters are designed to remove 99.97% of 0.3 micron sized particles that are in the air. To give you an idea of just how tiny that is, a grain of salt is on average 60 microns, and the human eye is unable to see any smaller than 40 microns! This means the medical grade HEPA filter in Briiv Pro offers the best available at-home filtration using the best filter fabric available.Ā
HEPA filters are made of glass fibres interlaced to create a matrix web. Normally, theyāre housed in a plastic casing and may also have additional adhesives. Our eco-HEPA variation uses 98% less plastic and glue than a standard HEPA filter as we only use the filter itself, and it has its own cardboard housing which can be reused and eventually recycled or composted.
Ā
These filter options will all be available alongside our existing filters when Briiv Pro launches on Kickstarter.Ā

Will Briiv ever focus on a completely compostable/recyclable filter option? Iām concerned about waste and having to dispose of either the nano matrix filter or the hepa filter three times a year for the life of the Briiv definitely adds up. I love that the other filters are sourced more sustainably and the other improvements with Briiv Pro.

Hi MeganĀ
Thanks so much! We actually did test a few completely compostable options this time around, but ultimately they weren't nearly as effective. While we'd love to be able to do this one day, right now as a still pretty small company we're often working within the constraints of available materials. I'm sure given the time and money our designers and engineers could whip something up in no time, but we aren't quite there yet! One day though š¤

Would you consider offering a completely compostable filter or a reusable one to use in place of the nano matrix filter in the Briiv even if it may be less effective for those of us who want to cut waste and are not as concerned about maximizing effectiveness?

Hi Megan,
There currently isn't a viable option for this unfortunately! We did some testing with a wool filter as our primary alternative but compared to the average 80-90% efficiency of Briiv Pro with the normal filters, it had an efficiency of 5%. We will continue to explore options though!Ā
In the meantime, we are still the most sustainable air purifier on the market, and even the nano matrix filter is less wasteful than its contemporaries. We've actually managed to remove 90% of plastics and adhesives that are usually associated with HEPA and HEPA-like filters, and is the only part of Briiv that isn't biodegradable or recyclable!Ā
Similar to the way we've improved the sustainability of the moss, by introducing the locally sourced, washable sphagnum moss, we are always working to improve and cut wastage.Ā
We really appreciate your insight Megan, and it's good to know others are as passionate as we are!

Hi Customer ServiceĀ
I'm deciding on maybe buying a pro. Do you have now a Hepa 13 filter? I couldn't see one on the website.
I'm also very curious as to why you've gone with the size of fan you did- it seems to have a much lower CADR rating than more traditional purifiers. But I love the eco values. Is it that you feel a lower CADR is needed to be effective, relative to those traditional brands ?
I'd also love to know what independent testj g you are able to share.
Ā
Thank you so much!

Hi Cushla Thompson,
Thanks for your interest in the Briiv 2 Pro! The nano-matrix filter in Briiv can't be called HEPA 13 as it doesn't have the same outer housing as a standard HEPA 13 filter. This is because the standard filter housings are plastic, and Briiv is plastic free! Briiv is able to reliably capture particles as small as 2.5 microns. Smaller than that, particles behave much more erratically so it's harder to guarantee they'll all be removed, but Briiv does have the capacity to remove particles as small as 0.3 microns from the air just like a HEPA filter.Ā
Briiv is designed to be a compact unit for smaller spaces, but on full power can cycle the volume of air in a 16m2 space in just 11 minutes! We've found that while it may take a little longer to filter the air than a traditional purifier, this is an easy give and take for the reduced plastic, reduced power consumption, and reduced impact of Briiv.Ā
