Is there thread/matter or other smart home Integration available?

What are the differences in power draw with the larger fan in the Briv Pro? Is the Briv Pro still low-powered via USB, using  5V?

    I second Sachins' question:

‘Is there thread/matter or other smart home Integration available?’

Also is it now a USB-C power connection?

Hi Sachin Guruswamy and Russ Baldwin,

We're currently finalising our Alexa integration (our engineer's been working pretty tirelessly to get this up and running, and it'll be released soon!), but once that's done we'll be shifting focus to develop a home assist integration. These things can take time, but once we have that we'll start looking into thread/matter support.

Briiv Pro will have an internal connection now rather than a port on the unit with just the USB to power connection being accessible. Honestly, Briiv doesn't require a huge amount of power to work and reworking everything to accommodate a USB-C would probably be overkill! While we know Apple are making the shift to USB-C, and this often means other companies will gradually follow suit, we can't see a standard USB becoming obsolete any time soon!

If you have any other questions do let us know!

    Hey Megan,

The Briiv pro still utilises the same low power 5V USB connection! We've achieved this by using a much more efficient fan, so even though the power is the same the fan is larger and more powerful.

    Hello,

Thanks for your answer. I am curious on why Alexa was first preference.

And as of thread/matter. it requires hardware to have some low bandwidth network capabilities. So based on that can you share if the current hardware is capable of adding this feature in the future ?

I am also very surprised that you went with a single platform, considering the effort involved, as almost all the big smart device platforms (Apple, Amazon, Google, and Samsung) now support Matter/Thread… so you could just support Matter/Thread and be compatible with all the major platforms?

Is this perhaps because the hardware cannot support Matter/Thread as Sachin enquired?

Many people already have an eco system of smart devices and they want a device which is compatible - hence the creation and the support of Matter/Thread by Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung and many others!

So if you are not going to support Matter/Thread out of the box then I think I may have to cancel my Briiv Pro order as I do not want another isolated system in addition to all my Matter compatible smart devices!

Same here. I don't own a single alexa devices. I would prefer something that plays nice with Google Home or generic Matter/Thread Support

    Hey Russ Baldwin,

We answered Sachin Guruswamy  over on Kickstarter, and I think Sean said it best so I'll pop his response below for you!

We are working on integrating our current setup with Matter. It’s not a straight forward integration, but the hardware we currently have (The physical PCB Components) are compatible with it.

We developed Briiv for Alexa initially as there are no costs with working with the Alexa network, so we could experiment, test and have something working that offers a benefit to some people without overextending our limited resources.

Our Engineer Chris is currently putting some time in this week to fully test how well we can integrate the latest Briiv devices with matter. We are at the right point to be doing this as we are still working on the firmware and app side of Briiv.

Once we have done some tests, we will be able to say for sure if we can do it before the end of the campaign, so if it’s a deal breaker for you there is nothing lost.

I will let you know how the testing goes and provide more detailed information as we work on this. That being said, if there is anyone here in the Briiv community that has any prior experience with building on the matter system we would love to have your input!

Let us know if you have any other questions!
