All essential oils should have a safety data sheet, or SDS, which is to help ensure that chemicals are used safely without risk of harm to users or the environment. The SDS will list possible hazards related to the oils, and generally include warnings about flammability or skin irritation. As a consumer you shouldn’t need to access the SDS, but knowing they exist and what to look for can be helpful. Your fragrance oil packaging or bottle should have relevant warning labels from the SDS if applicable.
Generally small quantities of fragrance oil diffused in the air wouldn’t necessarily cause reactions or severe risks, but it’s advisable to ensure a given option is suitable for you and your home. Some essential oils can be harmful to young children, pets, or those who are pregnant. Researching the essential oil you want to use beforehand will ensure you can take any necessary safety precautions.
